CONDESAN Works in the Andes

The Consortium for the Sustainable Development of the Andean Ecoregion (CONDESAN) is an association of public and private sector partners—NGOs, universities, international research centers, entrepreneurs, and government agencies—bringing scientific research closer to the realities of rural development.

Most of CONDESAN’s work takes place in "benchmark" watersheds that are broadly representative of the three major Andean ecosystems—the "green" humid Andes, the "brown" semi-arid Andes, and the "yellow" altiplano.

CONDESAN’s activities are linked to six underlying themes: preserving natural resources, conserving biodiversity, increasing productivity and commercial viability, improving economic and environmental policies, building local capacity, and enhancing communication and information-sharing.

Joshua Posner, a Professor of Agronomy at the UW–Madison and CONDESAN coordinator, was at the Center in February to outline ongoing work on testing the viability of watersheds as an organizing principle for research and development as well as for designing development plans, orienting investment, and attracting funding. A forthcoming LTC Tenure Brief, "Heresy from the Hilltop," provides CONDESAN researcher Dario Estrada’s and Posner’s preliminary findings.

CONDESAN can be reached via email (condesan@cgiar.org) or reviewed on-line (http://www.condesan.org).
